Welcome back to Term 3

Room 24 has some
great readers

Dear Parents ,

Welcome back to Term 3.I hope you had had a restful, relaxing break with your children and are raring to go. All of us in Room 24 would like to welcome Denzeil, Emily, Isabel and Lucas to our class.

As we come into class each morning we are working on being independent and getting ready for the day's learning. It makes us feel really proud  to do things on our own,

This term our Inquiry Learning topic is Safe from harm. We are going to be researching the main entry points to safely get to our classroom. Click here to read about safety to and from school.

Please keep up with the reading each night. We will be working on reading skills, strategies and comprehension depending on your child’s reading level. Please support our reading achievements by reading as many books as you can. Brush up on your reading skills by checking out this website. You could make a note of the good books you have read together and we could share  your book reviews in class. Click here for a  another cool website for you to explore.

Our story writing focus will be on placing capital letters and full stops in the right places. For our more adventurous writers, it will be varying sentence beginnings, adding detail and using descriptive words and phrases.

In Maths, we are starting off with Knowledge and Strategy Numeracy stages. We will also be looking at geometrical shapes especially with a focus on road signs. We practise our basic facts in class each morning -counting forwards and backwards, before and after, skip counting etc. Click here to practise your Maths skills . Remember practise makes perfect!!

Last term we discovered two  Basic Facts Maths whizzes in Room 24. Jacob Kite and Krishna Patel are now at the next level up.Keep up the good work !!!!

I have uploaded Term 3's spelling list for each week. Please look for it under Spelling. The children know their spelling groups. So please support them in their learning. In the last term we found a Spelling Star, Tegan Bracey has now moved up to the next level. Well done!

Could I please request you to return your child’s book bag and notebook with him/her each day as we need it in class daily?.

If you could give off some of your time to help us out with returning readers to the resource room, cutting out templates, shapes etc, sharpening pencils, typing out your child's story at home so we could publish it in our blog or any other activity that you could think of and assist us with, do let me know,we would really appreciate it.

As we we work on our Inquiry learning from 2 pm onwards, I have another important request that we would greatly appreciate if parents and younger siblings could please wait away from the deck outside our classroom. This time is crucial and important for our learning.

If you have any queries/concerns or even good comments regarding your child or their progress, please don’t hesitate to let me and I would be happy to address them.

Kind regards

Veronica Gardonis

Hi there,
As you all might be aware of now, the Ara Teina syndicate are currently focusing on being an eco friendly community and looking at our waste and what we can do with it.  I would really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes of your time with your child to fill out this survey we have created! It only has a 10 day lifespan so the sooner you do the survey the better :) We would really like to know how you and your child dispose of all your waste at home each day! We look forward to seeing your responses.
You can also take this survey via the link given: http://freeonlinesurveys.com/s.asp?sid=h2jbmb6sjuvxlhw479382

Cheers Nick

Our trip to the Transfer Station.

We had a great time learning about how important recycling is at the West Auckland Transfer station.
Special thanks to all those parents who were able to help out on the day.

True Colours Finale

All the colours of the rainbow were out in force on the dance floor for Ara Teina's dance interpretations to True Colours. The children did a wonderful job with so much talent... so many twinkle toes dancing their magic. We showed the sadness, craziness and happiness of such a lovely song.

Congratulations Room 24 children for being organised and knowing all your movements.

Basic Facts Legends

We just love basic facts. Congratulations to Anya for progressing to the EA stage (Early Additive). Also, congratulations to Elsa and Dylan for progressing to the AC stage (Advanced Counting). You have worked so hard to get to a new stage - ka pai for all your good work!

Constable Carl

Constable Carl came to visit us to talk to us about secrets and tricks.
Secrets
We learned that there are good secrets and bad secrets. A bad secret is when someone makes you keep a secret that makes you feel bad e.g. "Don't tell, or I'll be mean to you."

The children learned about who to tell if this happens: parents, teacher, police ...

Tricks
We learned that people can play tricks on us like, "I've got puppies in my car, do you want to see them?" We learned to say, "No, thank you" and go to the nearest safe adult.

Thank you Constable Carl for your lesson!

Hats

Just a reminder about hats. The sun's rays are still very hot at the moment and there are two weeks left of school. Please ensure your child wears a hat to school everyday. If they have misplaced their school hat then they can come to school with a cap temporarily.

Thank you

Anya's photo is in a book

Anya was the star today and she brought in something that is special to her and her family. It was a book about children in New Zealand... and there was a photo of Anya and her sister!

We thought it was very special that Anya got to be in a book and we loved seeing her photo of when she was three years old.

Come see us dance

Room 24 and Room 19 have joined forces to produce a dance for you. We will dance to a version of the beautiful song, True Colours. Other Ara Teina classes will be dancing to different versions of True Colours as well. All family members and friends are invited. We hope to see you there!

Jack's great great grandfather

Jack brought in a photo of his great great grandfather from World War 1. It was very special to get to see a piece of Jack's history. And....we couldn't believe how much Jack looks like his great great granddad!

Ribbons please

Room 24 are performing a dance with Room 19 at the end of the term.  We will be performing our dance to a version of the beautiful song, True Colours.

Our learning goal is to show movement and dance pathways that represent the lyrics of the song. We would like to show some of this through ribbons. If you have any ribbons or wide material that we can cut up to make ribbons, it would be most appreciated.
Thank you for any contribution to the ribbon fund.

No swimming this week or next week

For this week and next week, there will be no swimming for Room 24.

Ara Pakeke children are doing a special swimming course called Skills for Life Swimming. This course takes up all the swimming slots of Week 8 and 9. It is an intensive swimming course that will be available to Room 24 children when they become Year 3s.

Swimming for Room 24 will resume in Week 10 (31 March - 4 April).

The Waka Walk

I joined the Waka Walk on Sunday morning with Mrs Makani, Tia Makani and Mrs Bland. It was the start of the Eco West Festival. We absolutely loved this event. On the walk, we learnt about the history of New Lynn and Green Bay... and picked up rubbish on the way. At the end of the walk there was a band, healthy food and a canoe to marvel at - it was made out of coke bottles and had just returned from a 100km voyage down the Whanganui River to raise awareness of single use plastic bottles.

A robotics visit on Green Day

On Friday it was Green Day where we got to celebrate St Patrick's Day in our finest and whackiest green clothes. While we ate our lunch, we were visited by Jackson from the senior school. He showed us what he had been making on the Robotics programme. He made a robot and programmed it to turn 90 degrees every time it bumped into something - no remote control needed.

There will be opportunities for children at Arahoe in their later years to go on the fantastic Robotics programme. Click here to learn more about Robotics.

A week that was

Thank you parents for helping your children write about their names, ancestry and culture - so fascinating to read and share with the class! If you have not written on Padlet yet, you can always email me and I'll put it on for you - due Friday.

Here are some photos taken over the week:
Off to the Library
Drinking milk - thanks Fonterra and farmer shareholders.
The senior children helped us learn how to reduce and recycle the milk cartons. It was tricky folding the cartons - we got to write our name on the board if we folded the carton correctly. The cartons will be sent to Vietnam where they will be made into roof tiles. It was lovely to drink something so cold for morning tea. We are very grateful to Fonterra for offering to provide Arahoe with milk every day.
Kareena's Birthday
Kareena turned 6 today and was a gracious host to everyone. She reminded the children to say thank you at the beginning and she was very attentive in asking each child if they enjoyed their cake. Ka pai, Kareena! Thank you for your party and beautiful manners.
