Cross Country

Well done Room 24 for having fun, being great sports... and doing VERY well at cross country. The children ran fast and paced themselves along the track (twice around the school).

New Lynn Library Trip

We had an absolutely fantastic time at the New Lynn Library finding books on gold mining. The children were very excited to find books with detailed illustrations and photos of Central Otago gold mining.

Library Certificate!

The Children’s Librarian at New Lynn Library has a very special certificate for any Ara Teina child who says, “Hello” to her at the library.

Make sure you visit the wonderful New Lynn Library by the New Lynn Train Station.

This is what the certificate looks like:

Cross Country is tomorrow, Thursday

The cross country date has been postponed to tomorrow. Please bring shoes that you can run in and have an extra weetbix for breakfast! Hopefully the rain will stay away this time.

New Lynn Library trip on Monday

On Monday, we are off on our trip New Lynn Library. Please pack a rain jacket or umbrella in your child's bag if it is forecast to rain. If you have an Auckland library card, please pack that too! We get to take out books on this trip, which will be fun!

Delicious veges

Our garden beds are ready to harvest so Mrs Member, Muhammad's mother, kindly took a group of children out to cut vegetables from the garden.

Unfortunately, our garden is on the south side of a wall so nothing much grows there. Luckily, we were allowed to take few vegetables from other gardens to supplement our own harvest.

Mrs Member returned with stir fry and carrot cake! What a treat! Thank you.

Tapa cloth

We created patterns with quarter turns left and right to create tapa like artwork.

Kiwiana Disco

We had a lot of fun at the junior disco on Friday night. Congratulations Eve, who won a prize for her sheep costume.

Plant a tree with your kid!

Plant a tree with your kid!
We are having a working bee next Wednesday 29th of May.

We would like as many parents and children as possible to help with planting native trees, fertilising and many other things in the grounds of Arahoe School. If you are free, please turn up after school at 3:15pm outside the office to help out.

Please bring a spade, gardening tools, gloves and outdoor footwear. Thank you so much for any support you can give!

The NZ History Parade

Early Maori, settlers, whalers, gold miners... you name it, they were there at Arahoe School. We had an absolutely wonderful time in costume for the parade.

Thank you so much Room 24 parents for dressing up your children so brilliantly. The children learned so much because of you.

Please keep aside the outfits as we'll need them again later this term when we have a trip to Howick Heritage Park! We will also need the outfits for next term. Please keep adding to the outfits if you see anything that could pass as old gold mining clothes/equipment.

Geometry

For maths, we are studying geometry: shape and position. Today we learned how to give instructions behind a barrier so our buddy could recreate what we said. It was fun! It involved using precise shape and position language and... really good listening. We also practised our right and left - always a good skill to have!

Noel Leeming rocks!

If you need any electronic gear, please support Arahoe School by going to Noel Leeming this week. If you present this voucher, you will receive your purchase at only cost price + 10%.

Of this, 2.5% will go to Arahoe School. Remember your voucher - one went home last week or you can print out the voucher below.

A big KA PAI to Noel Leeming for supporting their local school.

Action Learning is so much fun!

Your child probably came home with lots of stories of what they learned in different Ara Teina classrooms last week. Room 24 got to have a taste of what each classroom is doing... and the other classrooms got a taste of gold mining when they came to Room 24!

Please quiz your child on what they learned in Room 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 (to jog their memory).

Action Learning is inquiry based learning. It will be our learning focus this term. This week, Room 24 will brainstorm all they know about gold mining and we will start forming questions on what we want to learn next.

Gold Mining Dress Up Day

Room 13 (Year 3) and Room 24 are buddy classes this year! Together, we are studying New Zealand gold mining. We will be incorporating our research on gold mining into a timeline of New Zealand’s history with other buddy classes. This will be an exciting term where the children will see each class’ contribution to a different part of our history. We will be learning:
  • simple research techniques of how to pose a question
  • how to access information
  • how to read information
  • how to present our discoveries e.g. as a mock interview, play or poster.

We are looking for family members who can give a talk to the children about mining in general, gold mining or a simple history of life in the late 1800s. Could you or do you know anyone who could talk about one of these subjects? If so, please let us know:).
On Friday, May 17th the school is having a dress up day. Each buddy class will dress according to their chosen subject and parade their costumes at assembly. For this day could you please send your child to school with named gold mining clothes in a bag.
You may want to dress your child in:

·         an old white shirt with buttons
·         long dress/buttoned shirt and skirt with bonnet or straw hat
·         jeans
·         black pants
·         boots or black or brown closed-toe shoes
·         overalls/waistcoat
·         men’s suspenders that go over the shoulders
·         country/old/farmers hat
·         Chinese farmer hat
·         another idea you may have in mind, e.g. policeman/town banker…
Your own clothes, borrowed clothes or second hand clothes will be just perfect! We will be needing your outfit later in the year for filming a gold mining skit so please keep the outfit handy in a tied up bag at home after Friday.

Thank you

Gold Mining

A nugget is a piece of gold you find in the ground or in a river.

This term we are learning about gold and how gold is an important part of New Zealand's history. We will be learning about how some people came to New Zealand a long time ago - all because of gold! Click here to see a slideshow on pictures about gold.
